Depression Therapy with Monique Ngo, LMFT

Most people at one point in their life has felt deep sadness or felt depressed. It is a normal and common experience to have felt depressed. Depression however is characterized not only by low mood and sadness, but with various additional symptoms that impact one’s mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.

The most beautiful people I've known are those who have known trials, have known struggles, have known loss, and have found their way out of the depths.

Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

Although severity of symptoms vary for each person, below are some common symptoms of depression

  • Low mood
  • Loss of interest in things typically enjoyed
  • Low energy/tired all of the time
  • Feeling sad
  • Sleep disruptions, oversleeping
  • Change in appetite
  • Feeling worthless or hopeless
  • Irritability
  • Restless
  • Feeling shame or guilt
  • Negative self-talk
  • Self-harming thoughts or behaviors
  • Thoughts of suicide

There are a variety of other kinds of depressive disorders outside of Depression like Bipolar I and II Disorder, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and Postpartum Depression. Commonly, mood disorders encompass extreme sadness and low energy, whereas other mood disorders can cause high energy or a combination of both high and low moods.

Treatment for Depression

Treatment for mood disorders vary and is unique to an individual’s needs. Therapy provides a space for individuals to have a safe and confidential space to explore their emotions without judgement. Depression can feel isolating; having a space to be able to acknowledge feelings and experiences is the stepping stone to begin moving through depressive symptoms.
